May 10-11 - Check-in and orientation

Busy but boring days getting checked in, room assignments, and then orientation.  Xanterra’s motto is Legendary Hospitality with a Softer Footprint, and they stress that everywhere.   Got the car registered with NPS so we can bypass the lines at the gate.

Susan got her plum assignment at the Hopi House.  This is a Mary Jane Colter designed building that sits right on the edge of the canyon.  I haven’t gotten any pictures yet but I will and share with you later.

Fred Harvey Company was the long time concessionaire at the Grand Canyon (in the late 1800s as the Santa Fe Railroad provided transportation into the Canyon).  Amfac bought Fred Harvey Company in 1968 and later changed the company name to Xanterra.  The companies kept the Fred Harvey influence, so these days I’m driving Harveycars (instead of the Historic Yellow Bus like last year in Yellowstone).

Very nice buses.

40'.  Clean burning CNG.  Automatic Transmission.

Gotta run for now, but I'll post more pictures soon.
